The struggle with many a rigid Logooli cultural practices

The Logooli community is one of the deeply cultured societies – with near everything supposed to have been done as per custom – to allow another custom to follow. One example is that for a mature man (with a child or more) to be buried, there must be a house structure at home. Another is that a boy must be circumcised and nursed in father land. If maternal family decides to, the boy will have a hard time reconnecting with father people - a dent on his masculinity. There were two children who got burnt to death in a house in Nairobi. The single mother had left for night work. Elders were told that one of the children was Logooli. The other, the woman had sired with someone else. The Logooli family wanted to burry their little one and long discussed the do’s and don’ts. Of a man who died childless and the grave was placed as if he had died as a man with children. It should have been dug on the sides, the grave. A real thorn should have been thrust in his buttocks, his name go...

Are you conscious of your time?

Today you woke up with a mental note of doing something. It would involve travelling to a work station or working from within. If you took leisure as an option or were put down by a cold don’t mind. You are as good as those who did something. When you get well you will compensate, won’t you?

Like bees in a hive, there is a kiosk to buy milk from for breakfast, there was a truck driver who transported the milk, there is a factory that processed the milk, there are farmers who milked, there is a veterinary personnel whom the farmers depend upon for better and new farming practices, the veterinary officer is employed by the government and the VAT on the milk accounts for his salary. It is a circle and its credit comes from urbanization.

Urbanization is daily localizing what you need. Services that were once rare and far away are at your door step. Different people with different expertise quickly converge hence increase in adding value to a thought or a service. Unlike before when production was localized and what could only be sourced was more of beauty items that people could do without, the present society depends on multiple service providers that if there be a failure in one it affects others too.

The gist of this article occurred when Mama Nitilie (those women who cook cheaply/economically for workers) served a large turnout during one of lunchtime meals. In her small capacity of a poor shade and a few helpers whom I would not call employees, she was in an impassive way participating in the errands of her time. Her gains would be to school her children or access a better house. The guards whom I see at the gates, the drivers who take populations to job places, the present Pharaohs and even me the modern scribe is in a way making history. But do I know that?

Taking advantage of the providences of our time to better the lives of people and conserve the environment would be our highest attainment. A view of poverty, war, corruption, degradation and exploitation among others do not positively add to the records of our time. The thirst for knowledge, healthy lives, exploration, spirituality and better environments should make us gather in forums, chant progressive words and meet in the night to do better.

In whatever you do, driven by the legacy and dignity of life that would be of benefit to the future generations, look deeply into the present. Be conscious by acquiring the highest understanding of a thing. Be a seeker. Be a hard worker. Control your mind. That when you are siring the next generation, you know what to hand over.

Being conscious of your time is more than what I have written here. And you know that.
