Chahilu’s Funeral; Logooli Culture in action

Guuga Chahilu was respectfully laid to rest at his home on Saturday 14th June 2025. Having passed on at Mbale Referral Hospital on 31st May 2025, the two weeks leading to his burial were full of cultural discussions. His passing on is a great loss to the Logooli Language and Culture Family as he was a custodian and informer of Luhya Indigenous Knowledge. An observation as to how the funeral proceeded leads us to revist Logooli traditions amidst modern realities.  One, having left the house alive and now coming back in state, Chahilu was to be taken inside the house, placed muihiilu for a moment and then officially taken out in wait for earth burial. His casket was able to enter the doors. There are cases where the dead would find it difficult to be taken in and then out due to an oversized casket or thin door. 1.     About Saniaga Community Based Organization

 

Saniaga Community Based Organization (S-CBO) is an official umbrella organization for community groups with 'Saniaga' identity whose desire is to pull together ideas and resources for the well-being of the members and community.

 

       'Saniaga' is known to be a founding parent who existed circa 14th century.

 

Saniaga was registered as a community based organization in the year 2017 at Sabatia, Vihiga County (Kenya) by the ministry of Gender and Social Services with a core mandate to empower the community through collection, preservation and dissemination of pedigree knowledge that champions positive development.

 

Saniaga CBO has a functional office and a physical address at Wangulu market, a distance of two kilometers from Chavakali junction, Kisumu-Kakamega highway. The organization's outreach is beyond the original Vihiga County due to the location of members and common interests pursued by individuals and the community groups subscribing to it. At present members are distributed in various counties namely; Kakamega, Kisumu, Migori, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Nairobi, Mombasa and Bungoma.

 

S-CBO operates as a membership organization, with members working on a volunteer basis to implement its activities at the community level. Membership is open to community members of all socio-economic categories and backgrounds as provided for in the constitution. As of January 2018 S-CBO membership was at two hundred.

 

 

At the governance level, S-CBO has an active board of members who offer guidance and support in line with each end year's AGM resolutions. There is an executive board made up of a chair person, treasurer, secretary and two community representatives who provide strategic leadership to the organization. This team makes all policy decisions in the organization. The organization is led by a Program Director (PD) who coordinates, provides technical support and supervision in the organization. The PD is supported by a team of Program Officers, (PO), Field Officers, (FO) and Accounts and Administrative officer - all who work on voluntary basis.  Presently the volunteer staff is of eight people.

 

S-CBO has wide experience working with community members in implementation of community development programs for it sources its expertise within the members. Within the one year that the organization has been in operation, it has partnered with organizations such as Family Search International, Africa 118, Saide Community Library, Wangulu Primary School, Debate Council of Kenya and Dala Adventures.
