Heavy responsibilities for elder aunt among the Logooli

With Seenge Fonesi. She is the elder grand daughter of Isagi and elder daughter of Amugasya. She is often present in functions involving the family of Amugasya. Pic taken on 18/4/2024. The elder sister soon becomes the elder aunt. It is this “seenge munene” (elder aunt) tag that she is tied to many cultural responsibilities – back home. To her marital family she may appear as any other woman, but she is not so in the eyes of her people. Marriage does not steal her away as it would happen with other daughters of the old man. To her, as days go and the old man and woman of the estate are dependents, she becomes increasingly present.  Her brothers also need her for almost all traditional markings. They are marrying, she needs to welcome the new wife. They are giving birth, she needs to come to midwife or “bless” the new born. They are paying dowry she needs to lead the women delegate. There is a conflict she needs to come for a hearing.  And many others. Traditions does not expect her to

The Ubaga

With baba Henry Obaga at his home in Bugina village

Ubaga (pronounced /u'baga/) of Mweremi ancestry begot Ahuha. Ahahu begot Paul Kivisi in 1877. Kivisi begot Mark Muruhia in 1913 and in 1942 Muruhia begot Henry Obaga, the informant to this.

Little was told about the origin of Ahuha but Paul Kivisi did come from eBendera to be live at Bugina Christian village where several others had gathered to live and be taught Christian life and doctrine. The village was in the present Bugina secondary school field and it is the expansion of the school that forced people out to such lands that yes they had and farmed from but lived at Bugina Christian Village. For Paul Kivisi got his piece of land at Irara village, ivuSari.

The mother of Paul Kivisi was called Rigogonyoro and came from vaMasero clan. A clan that occupy a large share of eBendera village and this maternal relationship may have introduced him there even as more other vaSaniaga were ongoing with migrations from South to North-East Maragoli. He had a sister called Mmaizi that got married iDako.

Living at Bugina Christian Church, Paul Kivisi married Vodembeke, muSuva by clan. And with her begot Sarah Ahunguru (m. Gamuguywa), Mariko Muruhia, Robai Ogai (m. iVuzuzu), Sabeti Kanguha (m. Gamuguywa), Norah Vinaywa (m. ivuMbaya), Ezekiel Ahuha, Jelda and Sayo (m. evoGonda).

He had just married his second wife, Raheri Rung'aho, muGamuguywa, and begotten a son and daughter with her when he was identified as one of the people to lead Christian campaigns in the villages by Yohana Amugune, a pioneer African Quaker leader. He had to 'leave her for' a kin by the name Rugaria. Of the already documented The Ruhare lineage.

The two children by Raheri were Asara John and Vutagwa that did alongside the new father moved from Bugina and it was not until Asara was mature and Vutagwa been married ivuTwa that Asara moved back home to be given the very land of Paul Kivisi at Irara.

Vodembeke died at the time that Paul Kivisi was still living at the Christian village. But she had left Paul Kivisi with another parcel of land just beside the vaAmbuzi. She had bought the land from muMuruga at the price of _maganda, imburi and imbago._ But she would be buried at the Christian village compound, beneath the goal post near the road at the school field.

Paul Kivisi would now marry again 'legally' and still perform as a religious leader. At the time now, there was a growing expansion of the school. Other people remembered to have moved also from the Christian village are;- Kiruhura who went eVohovore, Atumbwa to wiIriva and Jumba to iChanji among others. There was a must leave effort so that the school fences its plot which generally the larger part previously belonged to Ambuzi, Rung'azo family.

Paul Kivisi was posted to the newly formed iMang'unyuri church to evangelize. To go and live at Irara would be tough on distance. Living at the land which Vodembeke bought was near. And now he married Serina Vigedi, muSaria by clan. They begot five children;- Felda Kita, Gideon Aziaya, Zerifata Kahombi, Mary M'maizi and Danstone Ahuha Kivisi. Other children of Paul Kivisi were Joash Adika who was settled at iChatamil'lu and Romera who died in pre-independence stuggle at Olkalau, 1956.

A breakaway from the Quaker Faith had the sons of Paul Kivisi - Joash Adika and Mark Muruhia joining The African Church of the Holy Spirit (locally called avahuchi). Adika was among the founders. They aimed to worship 'as Africans' and would be 'chaotic' as the Quakers headquarters referred them.

Many other vaSaniaga joined The African Church of the Holy Spirit where their first headquarters was established at Handidi and with it taking its followers who had no other lifestyle away from camping and spending their lives in their white robs and caps waiting upon this 'anytime-descending-saviour' amplified by the crude reception they received from the authority of the time where Quakers at Kaimosi had influence. There were instances where the followers of this breakaway faith were lashed and beaten up by public too incited by the very authority. And the people who had lived close, knit by their blood ties kept close. The vaSaniaga whom Paul Kivisi influenced to migrate to Busali are the likes of Eboso of Bugina, Ijera, Imbanga and Rumasai of Bogerani. At Bugina the Ubaga neighbour the Inzara, Ambuzi, Inginyuri and Agara.

The first son of Paul Kivisi, Mariko Muruhia did train as a teacher. He was an athlete too and a footballer, tall and handsome. Described as a lifist by his son. It would task the government office at Kakamega to be writing to the Quaker mission at Kaimosi whenever they needed Mariko from school to attend to co curricular activities. The office felt it bureaucratic and Mariko was offered a civil servant job at Kakamega. He is known of having married one wife, a nurse, Rabecca Muhadi but had affairs with others (punned as taxi gasomba). They would separate when she claimed Mariko infected her with an STI.

Rabecca was her maiden name by the time she was marrying Mariko, a lady for Isukha. She was forced to change to Florence because her mother in law, Vodembeke was called Rabecca. It again happened that the son of Mariko called Henry (informant) married a muRogovo called Florence Norega who was also changed name to Beatrice Norega not to 'resemble' with her mother-in-law's alike.

Mariko Murushia had three children from two births of Rabecca Muhadi. Grace Ayuma (m. Mahanga), Henry Obaga and Beriha Zindori. The latter are twins. The girl died at 16 years and as the custom Henry was not allowed to see her being burried. He was whisked away.

Henry had a first son called Oscar Kivisi by Iminza, muKevembe while still at school. He married Florence Norega and begot six children where all except the last are March borns. Oliver Adika, Mildred Riani, Mercy Vodembeke, Owen Muruhia and Otto Enengu born June 30th 1986.
