Interacting with a University of
Nairobi student leader led me to think this way. KU is just KU. How can it be
best? Why compare it? Maybe it is depending on your GPA or it isn’t now that you serving a
two-year suspension term. All the fighting and goon activities that happen in
uncertified online panels and Nairobian related Newspapers of how Ababu poses
with a gun and Ndege Sirkal buys an expensive car for a university student is
only catalyzed by the 6,500/- pay from SONU. An executive member being paid
such an amount after remodeling another’s face is comical. I don’t want to
dwell here.
A university student as per my
definition is he (most of ladies come in with minor achievements hence a he
first) who readily values diversity and acts in such a manner that he would want
to look back and cherish the moment. It is in the blood of any careless youth
to act stupidly at this youth hour. Some of us dwell in stupidity as others
wake up from it as soon as the psych clicks. When you do goon activities and
think that you will best be remembered for that I will compare you to the
foolish hippopotamuses read in primary school that the hare cheated upon.
Being a student leader in KU does
not provide a forum for Kenyan future politicians yet many will cling to this- at least be a leader to self.
Young people are in a hurry to be worshipped and be called gods. Gods compete
with none. They are very jealous than Satan. Having fought for only 2000/- for
a congress person in Nairobi, you walk out of the school gates with a poor
reputation. KU pays better. He has no job as some claim to be job creators. His
soles took him to a bank and all but one certificate wasn’t attached- student
leader certificate. To him, this is shameful and may reduce his chances of
getting the job. He was however laid off the sixth day after coming to work
late in the name of being sick. A potential gangster is the look in his eyes.
We are not looking at UoN with a
bad eye. I would want a master in the institution for its reputation in terms
of credited personnel. I would want my brother to school there. All schooling
institutions are set up with a good agenda at the end but when shameful
elements gain breeding grounds the soil risks pollution. We are the inhabitants
of the soil.
Having been naive in High School
we carry the ignorance to campus thinking that we have conquered the world and
selves too. The absence of a red-eyed deputy principal in a crocodile jumper
and a cane sends us to all manner of juvenile delinquency. We fuck stupidity back
into ourselves by engaging in unprofitable activities. We drink, sex, waste
time, mock, fight, pollute, eat, spend and demolish instead of maximizing on
the better side of our energies. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed- Einstein.
A confused youth will only direct efforts to careless behaviour- politics is
one. Sex another.
Walking in village paths during
holidays feeling respected and achieving for Kenya has not yet hit a three
million graduate workforce, we fail to correct ourselves on a number of issues.
To some, it takes a lifetime to grow and the filling of the earth with foolish
people is the nature’s most misdoing to humans. We isolate ourselves in ways
and thoughts. We no longer accept the sacredness of the elders and their role
for we don’t have dignified elders. We think we are in the wrong places. Sadly,
we think we are better than them- the opposite of education.
When you do good, you feel good.
When you do badly, you feel bad; Abraham Lincoln’s religion. Having served
students at your best in whatever position of leadership, you become strong and
can advocate for your certificate. The certificate mocks when there are no
values to defend it. The education in you wastes away when no one can benefit
from it.
Simple activities in the campus
like clubs and societies participation are hardly attended by some. I could
have it rough standing at the old gate- the new is coming- only to wait for
hours for the not-coming souls. Most wanted to be paid for a children home
visit. Some just never had time. Maybe they participated in other activities.
Which activities? It is through participating in one that you would want to
participate in many. Clubs train leaders at their smallest areas of operation.
To vote in a student leader, it has ever been my thought to choose either a
class representative or a club leader- people who have showed interest in
volunteer leadership since their stepping in the campus before being commissioned
to previledged positions. Paying yourself up is what mostly happens.
Survival is by natural selection.
If you chose good…you will last by it. If you chose bad, it will destroy you.
When a campus does not value integrity, the aftermath is violence of mind and
actions. When an environment of healthy growth is not secured the bad elements
are more likely to spoil the good. A suspension is not a death sentence-it is ways
to have the mind assess itself. No one wishes bad to another and he who does
the sword to him first. And if UoN offers an environment to runaway stubborn
boys, it is like Kaimosi Boys that had intakes from suspended Senende Boys.
Instead of growing, the institution gradually becomes an approved school.
No one is holy. Mistakes come more
often to the young people poor in experience and vulnerable to meet needs. A
student who has been taught by his parents that not all that glitters is gold
will always think twice. A student who keeps a daily diary will see to self
correction. It takes habits to be identified as a spoiler- not a onetime
emotion.
As we pick up other steps in
life, the past will always be reflected in. Having learnt in a violent
environment where there is no right, it will stream down into our old age and
generation. At least let us step up environmental conservation measures and not
deal with open sincere ignorance. It is wrong to lie, to beat a comrade, to insult,
to riot and to form goon gangs. But it is right to express opinions in a manner
that you convince conscience it is good for you and others.
With that, you will not only be
at peace with the world but with self too. What does a young person want more than getting busy in search for knowledge?
