Chahilu’s Funeral; Logooli Culture in action

Guuga Chahilu was respectfully laid to rest at his home on Saturday 14th June 2025. Having passed on at Mbale Referral Hospital on 31st May 2025, the two weeks leading to his burial were full of cultural discussions. His passing on is a great loss to the Logooli Language and Culture Family as he was a custodian and informer of Luhya Indigenous Knowledge. An observation as to how the funeral proceeded leads us to revist Logooli traditions amidst modern realities.  One, having left the house alive and now coming back in state, Chahilu was to be taken inside the house, placed muihiilu for a moment and then officially taken out in wait for earth burial. His casket was able to enter the doors. There are cases where the dead would find it difficult to be taken in and then out due to an oversized casket or thin door. A man or a lady of his house who died out of home has to be taken in the house for a last ritual mark. But if the person had died inside, he or she would not be brought bac...

A mix up of names in the Oral Genealogy?

-: Thank you for that info Lungafa (The Rikambaya), very interesting but this narrative is wayward. The names mentioned especially Adakambiri, Muhindi are Kirima names. The Zimbalo people you mention are Prof Adaka Kikaya's ancestry who are vaKirima (the lineage home am married into) the Valwangara, and go by those exact names, Adaka, Bunyali, Muhindi, (Muluhia for Murusia) and of course others indeed migrated to Migori but know the area Mbaga is fully Kirima 2date...Sanigas......none but Kirimas their named too they cannot be Saniagas. Is indeed hisory suggests they are saniaga, then there is a huge untold something piece in the mix. Adaka, Muhindi, Bunyali coming from Igunga, Viyalo nende Muhundi areas, that is true but they are avaLwangala. Kirima not Saniagas. Could that Rev Muhindi be im a mix? The maternal mixture we talked before perhaps. This one does not add upto. It is a muddled Lwangala Saniaga. A hene yaha kwibigira ku Saniaga dave, it is a wrong territory. We may have to indulge Prof Kikaya  what he knows, if necessary about avaguga na vadada veve. Adaka, Muhindi, Muteve, Muluhia in the exact zimbalo home splashed on this wall. Something a miss but very interesting. Getting facts right, maybe!! 🤷🏻‍♂🤷🏻‍♂🤷🏻‍♂

-: I meant Muyundi, Viyalo nende Igunga - Prof people came from

-: Again, maybe that confusing bit that Murusia na Saniaga Mwikara begot 2 identitied! That.. "Isi vaviri, mama mulala" 🙊🙆‍♂never this one, not in the history of mankind a woman is spermed by two people to produce one guy!! Crunky🤧🤧

-: I have "distant cousins" who live in the area btwn Igunga and Weligina. Saniaga.  The name Muhindi features. We had a Murusha too(the grand son must be on this wall). I would not dismiss Lunga'afas findings. Maybe interrogate further to understand better. Ni hayo.

-: I agree, we should dismiss any knowledge as of right now we havent touched on how these earlier communities functioned and taboos like:
1. Ikirumindu
2. Kuvahirizana
3. Incest in community
4. Poligamy and naming of polygamous children
5. Unmarried woman with her children raised by their uncles.
6.Any other doings unacceptable to society that could have brought confusion.
These are yet to be touched in interrogations.
But Good Work Lungafa.

-: Hello @⁨Neccy Flossy⁩

I do not know much. But the findings will help us know much.

Do not fear. 😆. And if we find out wazia ivusaniaga navoreve 😂😂😆😆, then it will be a different story ooo. For this, it is people talking. Not me! If they saying truth or guesswork, at least they are saying something - worth your attention.

We have instances where Saniaga adopted other clan names to 'survive'. The story is there. An example is one family at Keveye that became vaMasero. Earlier on it is said were vaSaniaga. And there are those who adopted Saniaga identity. We shall come to that later.

Is Prof Kikaya muKirima muRungusia? Say something about his lineage... It would be nice to speculate and know why 'we' lost Zimbalo.

- Tereng!

-: I tend to agree on some of the points in this post. When I was young, there were prevalence of evictions of people( the whole family to far away Uncles ) because of bad deeds. It was even a taboo to talk about it at home.
