The struggle with many a rigid Logooli cultural practices

The Logooli community is one of the deeply cultured societies – with near everything supposed to have been done as per custom – to allow another custom to follow. One example is that for a mature man (with a child or more) to be buried, there must be a house structure at home. Another is that a boy must be circumcised and nursed in father land. If maternal family decides to, the boy will have a hard time reconnecting with father people - a dent on his masculinity. There were two children who got burnt to death in a house in Nairobi. The single mother had left for night work. Elders were told that one of the children was Logooli. The other, the woman had sired with someone else. The Logooli family wanted to burry their little one and long discussed the do’s and don’ts. Of a man who died childless and the grave was placed as if he had died as a man with children. It should have been dug on the sides, the grave. A real thorn should have been thrust in his buttocks, his name go...

Avasaniaga Self Help Group - Mbale

Avasaniaga Self Help Group - Mbale

Today was the third mobilization sitting for Avasaniaga Self Help Group at Mbale. A group that was formed in 2017 but due to little internal and external motivation suffered breakaway of members.

The group, interimly  chaired by William Agesa and patronized by Elijah Ukiru has embarked on a new leaf to mobilize the many vaSaniaga in Mbale and environs towards the much needed Saniaga interactions for collective development in the area.

To start, members are contributing Ksh 200/- for registration. Ksh 50/- minimum share weekly contributions and Ksh 20/- for snacks during a sitting. A member is required to have a starting share contribution of Ksh. 500/- from where the minimum weekly Ksh. 50/- will be topped in growing one's shares. To be on the safe side, the sitting agreed on focusing on building share capacity and totals before thinking project(s). It was also the same thought on matters table banking and lending. Things that would wait for the group to be firm and members well pulled.

For welfare and the unfortunate loss of a loved one, the meeting agreed on supporting a group member with Ksh. 500/- when a loved one demises. The person should be a member of the member's nuclear family. Mother, father and one's children. This applies to vaSaniga ladies in their marriages. The mother/father-in-law is part of her nuclear family. Or a child under the guardianship of a member to the group. Only that the group discouraged supporting relatives who would otherwise been active to the group and helpful. On great unfortunance of the demise of a member, Ksh. 1000/- a member would be mobilized and given to the immediate next of kin.

On an individual commitment, Mr. Elijah Ukiru  offered a room in one of his premises to for meeting conveniences come an office. Elijah also, aware of Saniaga Sacco mobilization, said there was also room for an office to run the empowerment initiative.
