Heavy responsibilities for elder aunt among the Logooli

With Seenge Fonesi. She is the elder grand daughter of Isagi and elder daughter of Amugasya. She is often present in functions involving the family of Amugasya. Pic taken on 18/4/2024. The elder sister soon becomes the elder aunt. It is this “seenge munene” (elder aunt) tag that she is tied to many cultural responsibilities – back home. To her marital family she may appear as any other woman, but she is not so in the eyes of her people. Marriage does not steal her away as it would happen with other daughters of the old man. To her, as days go and the old man and woman of the estate are dependents, she becomes increasingly present.  Her brothers also need her for almost all traditional markings. They are marrying, she needs to welcome the new wife. They are giving birth, she needs to come to midwife or “bless” the new born. They are paying dowry she needs to lead the women delegate. There is a conflict she needs to come for a hearing.  And many others. Traditions does not expect her to

And who are these Independence Heros?

-: I just learnt that if it was not for the contribution of the Luhyas and particularly the Maragoli, the struggle for independence may not have been as successful.

Nobody mentions our freedom fighters anywhere!!

-: Who are they?

-: Alfayo Agufana,
was a freedom fighters.
Was arrested  with a gun and bullets and sentenced to death.
The Quaker Church petitioned the government and he was set free.

-: *Gideon Mweresa*
a.k.a. Ilibuluka

He was jumped of a moving police vehicle after being arrested in Kaloleni for organising Mau Mau ...

-: *Joram Amadi*
He published a clandestine newspaper,
"Umulina was Vosi"
Which advanced freedom struggle messages, Mau Mau and all ...
He later joined the Standard and finally Nation newspaper

-: But who talks about these things?

-: A deadly man like *Kiburu* is said to have dodged arrest in Vihiga and ended up joining the Mau Mau ...

-: Ooh..ngani! I knew him from far and I had been told he was a journalist before, but I didn't know this!! There's a lot of Maragoli history that seriously needs recording.

-: *Otiende*

The witty man.
Uncelebrated freedom fighter and first educationist.

-: And last but not least, JD Otiende, harboured Jomo Kenyatta on many occasions before he was finally arrested when he went to see his family.

All Mau Mau  communications and coordination was done by JD.

Now you see Luos chest thumping ...
Hakuna!
Know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

-: He is the only senior politician with no biography or story in print ...

As a matter of fact, the oppression of the Luhya is in the mind ...

We need liberation

-: The brother to Japheth Imbwana is championing a museum in Vihiga.

He knows heroes around and we should go out to look for more.

Tentatively they have sought permission to use the building at Vihiga Yearly meeting of Quakers. The house of Mr. Rees, the first missionary.

If it successfully happens then we shall have a place to celebrate these enigmas. 🀝🏽

-: Amen. Joram Amadi was my dad's Best Man in 1955 at Kidundu Friends Church. We met many times at home and heard his personal story verbatim.

-: The Saniaga story is slowly generating to the Maragoli story.

With a good taste, a good pen, a good eye and a good tongue, we can get a sweet book out of the stories and relations.

- πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½

-: His name was Timba Buru, not Kiburu.. yeah a deadly Munoywa/Lwanda man a notirios Maragoli

-: It was sad.

But it is true, that Mulogoli used is military prowess and good public relations to assimilate other clans among the Luo (Avagihayo), Banyore, Kalenjin, Idakho etc
And that explains their exponential growth and land coverage within a span of about 500 years.
It takes than many years average for me to trace back my ancestry to Mulogoli.

The Maragoli have not been here for very long ...

-: We are of yesterday.

Though Ayah writes we are not of yesterday.

Compare and contrast. πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ€—πŸ€—

-: I hope we are talking about the same man.
Vihiga has had its fair share of very dangerous people ...
*Majoge* must have been one of the last in the late 70's

-: I think it was more like "Ki Timba Buru". It was said the man could disappear in thin air as a wanted man

-: 🀣 yes that is the guy.

On the last day of his disappearance the Mzungu police were tipped the house in which he was having supper.

The plan was to shoot the guy as soon as he stepped out.

Kiburu being who he was, he pushed the other guy out first.
The man was shot and in the confusion, Kiburu disappeared never to be seen again ...
A real _mangidi_ of a man.

-: πŸ‘†πŸΎHope we have a column on this "notorious men of Maragoli"

-: Interesting!!!

-: 🀣 it is history.
Like this fella who caused the establishment of Vihiga police station where it is.
He slaughtered an entire family and only musician Agade a small kid then  survived.

The man hid I the Kilindilu Church, the wife would take him food there while on the run ...

-: Our community is rife with all sorts of interesting stories and history!! I should camp there and get as many as I can...although I tend to be a mañana person too.😏😏

-: Someone put this down in some documentation of sorts tafadhalin

No sensible word here goes unarchived.
