The struggle with many a rigid Logooli cultural practices

The Logooli community is one of the deeply cultured societies – with near everything supposed to have been done as per custom – to allow another custom to follow. One example is that for a mature man (with a child or more) to be buried, there must be a house structure at home. Another is that a boy must be circumcised and nursed in father land. If maternal family decides to, the boy will have a hard time reconnecting with father people - a dent on his masculinity. There were two children who got burnt to death in a house in Nairobi. The single mother had left for night work. Elders were told that one of the children was Logooli. The other, the woman had sired with someone else. The Logooli family wanted to burry their little one and long discussed the do’s and don’ts. Of a man who died childless and the grave was placed as if he had died as a man with children. It should have been dug on the sides, the grave. A real thorn should have been thrust in his buttocks, his name go...

Reminiscing Chugi, year 3020.

It is the year 3020, the Roman calendar still works. You are coming from Kigama. There is traffic on the main road, Mudete to Gisambai. Probably already named after Anzigare or Musimbi, the yet to be born, who will have not have been politicians but in their life will have served their people unreservedly, fought ignorance and in fighting poverty, uplifted the livelihood standards of Varogori.

You decide to go via Wadigula. A one way tarmacked road, down the valley bottom. You would not have a mind to remember once fresh water springed from there. Road barriers and could be a high rise in the ridge will see you move a little slowly to connect the main Kigama-Munoywa-Itando-Lunyerere road. You discover the slow moving traffic is because of the round about ahead, at Chugi.

Up Mungudumani, now Riverside, you tet a tete reach the roundabout. On the left a two way lane heads to Kisangula. Ahead is Mulundu and Kivagala. On the right is your office way - Ideri. So you head as to Mbale.

You wonder why and what and when. Family heavens but you cannot say how. Was Chugi a school, was there a steep hill to Inyali before Kisangula?

But work and invention gets you back to 3020. You were almost remembering your previous life but... Inventions. So the traffic lights at Chugi blinks green. You curve. And zoom. In an electric car. Not anyone on foot. Naa, but when you look at the rear you see an old woman, using her walking stick. The road is but a path. Ahhh! You blink and there is nothing. You can't remember a thing. You almost in office!

Happy Working Day!
