Luanda Reggae Defenders - what is your long term agenda?

Luanda Reggae Defenders is a now a popular movement with roots in Vihiga and border Siaya and Kakamega counties Attention is brought to the manner and conduct the movement has gained fame and followers, mainly the Youths. The movement capitalizes on funerals. With a poor culture of putting the dead to rest, the Reggae Defenders have taken it by storm and rebranded the infamous ‘Disco Matanga’ – disco at funeral. They have this huge old school sound system that is over buzzing to no clear reggae song - that they hire a pickup to carry - and it has a young DJ mainly standing there than mixing anything. Often, against the rules, the casket is grabbed from a hearse vehicle and tied to a motorbike. There it will be swayed and jerk breaked between other motorbikes on the narrow roads. That, is, how a fellow soldier, often a young dead, is mourned. ...

Saniaga Kamunara - Gisambai group

Kamunara CBO is an active group of Saniaga comprising members from Gisambai Ward and environs. It is chaired by Mr. Kedemi Joseph and secretarized by Levi Kesore. It has 94 members in its register and meets monthly in members' homes. It was registered in 2018.

To power their activities, they are engaged in share contributions, table banking (Merry go round) and also benevolent activities. They sometimes hold harambees to raise funds for initiatives. Membership Registration is Ksh 500/-, membership book Ksh 150/-, Share contribution is Ksh 100/-, table banking Ksh 200/- and benevolent Ksh 200/-. For refreshments while meeting, each member is required to give in Ksh 50/- for the sitting.

A meeting day starts by paying the above or confirming payments with the responsible persons in each of the mentioned areas of contributions. Once the payments are done and members have gathered, the meeting is opened with a prayer.

Meetings are focussed with guests welcomed and introduced, minutes read and matters arising looked at. A member speaks while the rest listen. Resolutions are adopted with the committee in charge given action mandate. Committees are tasked to handle matters concerning them.

One crowning committee is the Dispute Resolution one. It is headed by Mr. Imbwana Japheth. Issues affecting Saniaga that would otherwise breed discontent are brought to the committee and action to solve them initiated. It is agreed by the group that they are able to solve issues affecting them and remain a united people.

Members of the group are looking forward to hear about other Saniaga groups and their activities. Their leadership wishes for an umbrella leadership to link the groups and pursue Saniaga interests to higher levels.  The group would also like to see more young people actively engaged in its activities for wholesome action on activities.

Concluding, the group is at a better position of maximizing on the abilities of its members to harness resources worth impacting them and the community at large. I was impressed by their simple disposition, freeness, hearty interactions and clarity of their activities.

With Thanks
