Chahilu’s Funeral; Logooli Culture in action

Guuga Chahilu was respectfully laid to rest at his home on Saturday 14th June 2025. Having passed on at Mbale Referral Hospital on 31st May 2025, the two weeks leading to his burial were full of cultural discussions. His passing on is a great loss to the Logooli Language and Culture Family as he was a custodian and informer of Luhya Indigenous Knowledge. An observation as to how the funeral proceeded leads us to revist Logooli traditions amidst modern realities.  One, having left the house alive and now coming back in state, Chahilu was to be taken inside the house, placed muihiilu for a moment and then officially taken out in wait for earth burial. His casket was able to enter the doors. There are cases where the dead would find it difficult to be taken in and then out due to an oversized casket or thin door. A man or a lady of his house who died out of home has to be taken in the house for a last ritual mark. But if the person had died inside, he or she would not be brought bac...

I am of Kipanga Lineage

-: Hi all. I also belong to the lineage of Saniaga located at Lunyerere. I have a brother called Musivogi, other brothers names are Eboso, Adamba, Adisa, ryaagara, unari. My cousins are Ayiro, Chahilu, Obimbo, Lutsinga, Lisavirwa, Matevwa, Ikivisi, Ondego. Other cousins are Livumbatsi, Bernard Ngoda, Mukayaji and many more. These are some of the original Saniaga names. Our ladies Saniaga names include names like Atiamuga, Musimbi, Sagina, Ambogo and others.

-: My father is a cousin of Kipanga and is alive. His age as calculated from the ID is 94years. He claims that he is 98. I suggest that you arrange to gather more information from him. He is called Kafuna

-: Great? Kivisi where is your home?

-: I have heard if mzee Kafuna but not had the pleasure of meeting him. I was reliably informed he has a son who lives in Webuye who has custody of the famuly history. Might you be the one?

-: Lisavirwa dave. Our Family name is Visavirwa(read with the maragoli tongue). You forgot Iramuka(Lamuka)

-: Mukayagi was originally supposed to be named Musivoji too, from reliable sources😂😂and Livumbazi is from our maternal side ivudiidi. I'm named after our maternal grandfather. But there's also Misoga, Mukuzi and Matevwa (Ben).

-: Thanks Bro. I was informed that it was rare to name boys from the maternal side, but girls was normal

-: Igamuguywa, at the Mbale water supply. Kindly allow me to prepare him before you visit. He can hardly sit.

-: Yes baba. If it happens sooner it will be all appreciations.

So they moved from Lunyerere to Gamuguywa? Further ahead?

What of the fate of Saniaga in South Maragoli when pointers are slowly directing to Chatamilu/Bugina. Did they come from Bugina? Cause there are many Saniagas in Inyanza and I am thinking of going to camp there for their contacts here.

Another thought, could we have been Kalenjin remnants? By names of places we are made to believe majority of places were Kalenjin zones. And for our belief in the monkey totem...

-/thanks

-: That's where I belong my late grandfather was called Thomas lamuka he hailed just about 40m from Standikisa on your way to Vugisivi.

-: can someone try talking to Prof Indire, Enos oyaya of Siaya and Paul Titi of nandi, all saniakas to. walk into the past path of lineology of the group

-: I have tried severally to meet Prof. Indire. Could be one day it shall not be a big deal.

Paul Titi of Nandi related to Arap Titi? If so, I was there. He is not a Saniaga but his clan totem was suggested to be a monkey - to confirm.  The lack of Saniak among nandi clans can be substituted by clan totems to see if we could get any leads.

Shed more light on Enos Oyaya of Siaya.

Thanks.

-: Kindly give me Msivogi's number. I have settled around Webuye and would love to meet him. I hear he might have taken the mantle from Kipanga(this I was tolded by Kipanga's own son)

-: Make haste to meet this mzee if you can Patrick. He is the eldest in our family now.

-: The Titi's are Saniagas.Monkey (totem)confirms.Only that, there is a tendency of Luhyas ,when they are assimilated in Nandi they don't want to reveal their identity

-: ION our brother/Father Julious Atsiaya from Chekombero has fallen. Those of us who know the Family kindly condole with them. They are our Saniaga brothees

-: Prof.Indire is hit heard by stroke. Even though he is an egoist
