The struggle with many a rigid Logooli cultural practices

The Logooli community is one of the deeply cultured societies – with near everything supposed to have been done as per custom – to allow another custom to follow. One example is that for a mature man (with a child or more) to be buried, there must be a house structure at home. Another is that a boy must be circumcised and nursed in father land. If maternal family decides to, the boy will have a hard time reconnecting with father people - a dent on his masculinity. There were two children who got burnt to death in a house in Nairobi. The single mother had left for night work. Elders were told that one of the children was Logooli. The other, the woman had sired with someone else. The Logooli family wanted to burry their little one and long discussed the do’s and don’ts. Of a man who died childless and the grave was placed as if he had died as a man with children. It should have been dug on the sides, the grave. A real thorn should have been thrust in his buttocks, his name go...

Today's Meeting with the Chairperson

Chairperson : How is Saniaga fairing on?
Me : Very good!
Chairperson : Well. How many have registered?
Me : Now, 18.
Chairperson : O! Not 100? You people are sitting on gold.
Me : They will give. They've promised
Chairperson : What can be done that they register quickly? May someone think of an idea to have people get involved. You need to have picked up by now.
Me : An idea like? To make them be easy.
Chairperson : Ask them. Thy can't lack. You do not need to keep reminding a person.
Me : Really you do not need to explain to a Saniaga why he or she should be a Saniaga. I understand 🙈
Chairperson : You need get people involved. Registration is now a past thing. Get moving. Let them know is a requirement anyway.  From the contacts, reach at least 100 people. Let each of them commit 1000/-. They can. How much is that?
Me: One hundred K.
Chairperson :  What can you do with one hundred thousand? Don't answer me because you do not have. Or else you would be using it somehow!
- We laugh -
They may ask, 'why?' but you only need assure them safety of the money.
Me: To the bank. All will be in the bank.
Chairperson : That is good. From there the very contributors will need to suggest ways to productively channel the money. For instance, see this farm. I can let you do something you like. Bee keeping, Green houses, Vegetable farming all for a start as you think bigger. Or you can decide other things.
Me : That is good, that is why you are the chairperson.
Chairperson : You need take up the mantle you young people. Why involve a muzee in your things?
Me : You are Saniaga, not mzee.
Chairperson : You get the challenge. Let me see you people utilise the opportunity.
Me : We take the challenge.
